How to Study Smarter: 6 steps

six steps to study effectively

Have you ever wondered why some students always seem to be smart and others persistently struggle? What are these students doing to be smarter?

Nobody is born knowing how to study. Instead, you must learn the skills to study effectively. By doing so, you become an effective student.

Why should you work on your study skills? It will facilitate your learning and help you to succeed in classes, especially as you move to middle school and high school.

Here are six ways to study smarter:

  • Create the ideal studying environment

  • Create goals

  • Make Learning Relevant

  • Question Everything

  • Take Regular Breaks

  • Revision

1. Create the ideal studying environment:

An effective learning habit doesn't start with how you study. It starts with where you study. The place you study influences your ability to concentrate, focus, and remember. When your environment is distracting, noisy, cluttered, noisy, etc., it will hinder you at every step and you will lose focus. It's therefore important to have an environment that's comfortable, calm, and organized, so you can remain focused, motivated, and inspired.

Remember, a good study environment is the first step to studying better.

2. Create goals:

Set a goal before you begin studying. It helps you find the right direction for your study session. If you want to set a goal, make it SMART, which means that it should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed. To begin with, 1. Specify what you want to achieve. 2. Describe the actions you take 3. Set a time frame to accomplish these actions 4. Outline how you will measure the progress.

Example: I will complete this chapter within 2 hours. There are 4 topics, each taking 30 minutes. Once I have completed the chapter, I will revise it. Once finished, check how much time you spent studying, if you completed it within the time period or if time lapsed, and take corrective action next time.

3. Make Learning Relevant:

Make your learning relevant and readily applicable to your life and circumstances. In order to do this, First have a think about the knowledge you will acquire by learning this material. Then consider the skills that you could develop as a result of that knowledge. The key here is to clarify exactly how this material you are learning can be applied to your situation. This sparks your motivation and puts you into a more optimal state of mind. You will become smarter.

4. Question Everything:

Asking yourself questions is one of the keys to becoming the smartest student. This drives your curiosity to want to learn more. This proceeds you with 1. Clarify what you know 2. Discover what you don't know 3. To figure out what questions need to be answered.

5. Take Regular Breaks:

It is a myth that the more hours you put into studying, the more you learn. However, this is often not the case. In order to be a smarter student, you have to learn more in less time. Taking a 5 min study break every 30 minutes actually helps promote better assimilation of information. This works because your brain needs time to integrate and make sense of the information it is learning. It needs time to process and make relevant associations to help you understand things at a deeper level.

6. Revision:

Last but not least, take the time to revise everything you learned. This helps in recalling all the things you studied and thus enhances the memory.

Follow these six steps regularly for a few weeks and see the results. You will feel better knowing you can study smarter by spending less time.
