Work Life Balance

Work Life Balance

Work-life balance means different things to each individual. It’s not just about splitting your time 50/50 between work and leisure but making sure you feel satisfied and fulfilled in both areas of your life. Work-life balance looks like this: You can meet your deadlines at work and still have time for friends and hobbies; Getting enough sleep and eating well; You don’t have to worry about work when you’re at home.

We may find that this is more challenging if, we have some family responsibilities, a high-demanding boss, or some health issues etc.

Is my work-life balance unhealthy?

Working long hours or being under a lot of stress can become normal for us, especially if we’ve been doing it for a long time or all our coworkers are in the same boat. You might need to work long hours in order to earn enough money to pay the bills.

Researchers suggest that those who can make changes periodically can check their work-life balance by following five steps.

  • Take a Break and Ask yourself
  • Consider your feelings
  • Reprioritize your priorities
  • Think of your alternatives
  • Implement Changes

1. Take a Break and Ask yourself: what’s currently causing me stress or unhappiness? How is that affecting my work and personal life? What am I prioritizing? What am I losing out on? We rarely reflect on work until there is a major life event such as the birth of a child or the death of someone close to us. Taking a moment to consider your priorities can help you decide whether you are living and working in the right way.

2. Consider your feelings: Now that you are more aware of your current situation, how does it make you feel? Are you fulfilled and happy, or angry and resentful? Being aware of your feelings can help you decide which changes you want to make.

3. Reprioritize your priorities: Think about what needs to change. Spending time with families. Weekends Trip. Sports, time for other hobbies etc.

4. Think of your alternatives: Can you change anything at work that will help you achieve your new priorities?

5. Implement Changes: You could ask for flexible hours, ensure that you use all your annual leave, or not check your email at the weekend.
